Fitted home offices in Monks Orchard: what you get
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, shaped by the way you work. For a home in Monks Orchard, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If your home has flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and a laptop that moves from room to room, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around Monks Orchard, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What fitted home offices cannot fix
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- Connecting printers and screens
- Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Built-in desks
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Cable routes
- Filing drawers
From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a written quote for the office.
- The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Questions from Monks Orchard
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Monks Orchard?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Monks Orchard is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Monks Orchard?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can you add power points to the desk?
That is work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The number of doors and drawers
- How big the furniture is
- The internal fittings
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard shelving can sag under the weight of books and files. How far a shelf spans and what it carries make a difference. We size the shelves for what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength is needed. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Shelves
Office shelving often carries heavy loads. Span, depth and load all matter. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It’s applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
