Fitted Home Offices in Temple Bar

Planning fitted home offices for a home in Temple Bar? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window
  • No way to put work away
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Temple Bar

Some people want to separate work from home life. With doors over the desk, work can be put away at the end of the day. It helps the home feel restful after hours.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • No way to put work away
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go

For an older house near Temple Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Fitted home offices in Temple Bar: what you get

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. For a home in Temple Bar, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. People normally come to us about wires with no tidy route and flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Temple Bar are that age. Shelving can go up high above the desk, with the top shelves for things you rarely need. Some internal walls in older houses are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Temple Bar?

Yes, we work across the City of London, Temple Bar included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to City Thameslink station?

Yes. We cover all of the City of London and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size during the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What fitted home offices can’t fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Connecting printers and screens

Pull-out drawers

We make the drawer boxes from birch plywood for strength. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts match the rest of the office.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the desk, the carcasses and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.

Temple Bar homes and fitted home offices

About 48% of the homes in the streets around Temple Bar went up before 1919, and about 22% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Strand Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Temple Bar. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance, especially for larger pieces.

If you live near Lincoln's Inn Fields, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Near listed buildings like Chambers on West Side of New Court, less than half a mile south of the centre of Temple Bar, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
