About our TV and media units in Bloomsbury
If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. If you’re living with equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and leads that show from every angle, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
With most households around Bloomsbury in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. TV and media units are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, and assembled and fitted in place. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it’s worth checking first.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What affects the cost of TV and media units
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The internal fittings
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Bloomsbury
Does a conservation area in or near Bloomsbury affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
I live near London Euston station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That’s a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
Do TV units need ventilation?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.
What TV and media units cannot fix
Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Structural changes to the wall
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

Advice
TV and media units for homes in Bloomsbury
Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Bloomsbury, with about 21% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. 24 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Bloomsbury. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand.
The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a period home close to St George the Martyr Holborn, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Bloomsbury is about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras, within the London Borough of Camden. We can visit homes in Bloomsbury on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. In Camden, Bloomsbury is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 28 places on our list.
We work across the NW1W, W1T and NW1 postcode area for TV and media units. Whether you live on a street like Drury Lane, Euston Road and Duke's Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for TV and media units. Bloomsbury is near the A401 and A501; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. Other places close to Bloomsbury include St Pancras (1 mile north-east), Euston (1 mile north-west), Kings Cross (1 mile north), Holborn (1 mile east) and Fitzrovia (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Camden, we also cover Hampstead (3 miles north-west), West Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Kentish Town (2 miles north-west), Greenhill (3 miles north-west), Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west) and Dartmouth Park (3 miles north).
What’s near Bloomsbury
We fit furniture in homes around Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ, Queens Larder Public House and Pilsudski Institute of London. Bloomsbury’s nearest station is London Euston station, roughly 0.6 miles north-west of the centre. A little further out are National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (less than half a mile south-east) and Montfichet's Tower (1.2 miles south-east). Open spaces near Bloomsbury include Barnsbury Wood and St. James's Park Lake.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
