Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Loft storage for homes in Chalk Farm

We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself is not our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. With the room in place, we can plan the storage. In Chalk Farm, it all begins with a design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are low eaves that nobody can use and a loft room that still feels unfinished, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Most homes around Chalk Farm are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Why bespoke in Chalk Farm?

Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. The sections are assembled once inside.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

What you get with us

  • Built around your room
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Loft storage in Chalk Farm: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Chalk Farm were built before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 21 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Chalk Farm. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the area around Chalk Farm, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Winfield House, about 1.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. For an older house near St Silas Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Why people ask for loft storage in Chalk Farm

Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. Behind the knee walls, there’s space nobody can reach. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home

If you live near Primrose Hill, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It’s done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

FAQs: loft storage in Chalk Farm

Does a conservation area in or near Chalk Farm affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Kentish Town West station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and the pieces are put together in the room.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
