Loft storage for your home in Chinbrook

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Loft storage in Chinbrook: what you get

Each eaves cupboard is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Chinbrook. If you’re living with unused space in a dormer and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Chinbrook, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Common questions about loft storage

Is Chinbrook in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Chinbrook is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Grove Park station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawers, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

What prompts loft storage in Chinbrook

Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

If you live in a period home close to Jubilee International Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Heavy boxes are best kept low.
