Loft Storage in Deptford

In Deptford, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. Your eaves cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home

Loft storage in Deptford

Loft storage in Deptford: what you get

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in Deptford, we will see what’s there. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about low eaves that nobody can use and a converted loft with no fitted furniture.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. Around Deptford, where most households live in purpose-built flats, that is worth thinking about early. A shallow cupboard in a hall or a seat with drawers can hold a surprising amount.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Common questions about loft storage

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Deptford?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Deptford?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Deptford homes and loft storage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Deptford were built since 2000 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Deptford include Church of St Paul (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Charnel House to Church of St Nicholas (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 66% of households around Deptford live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 39%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

Queen's House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Paul's, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Living in a block of flats near Deptford station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Loft walls are rarely straight, and floors are often out of level. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. Our storage is scribed to the room and set level, so the lines look right. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What you get with us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Built around your room
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

What affects the cost of loft storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
