Loft storage for your home in Welling
Loft storage in Welling: local notes
In the area around Welling, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 75%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Welling include Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), under half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the streets around Welling (about 75%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.
Close to Danson Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Danson House, about 0.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.
Welling is in the London Borough of Bexley, about 2 miles south of Sidcup. We cover Welling as part of our work across Bexley, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Welling is one of the places in Bexley where we make loft storage.
Postcode districts we cover here for loft storage: DA16, DA15 and DA6. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Days Lane, Hook Lane and Lyme Road, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Welling sits close to the A207. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make loft storage in Crook Log (1 mile east), Blendon (1 mile south-east), Upton (1 mile east), Bexleyheath (1 mile east) and West Heath (1 mile north-east). Other parts of Bexley we cover include Sidcup (2 miles south), Erith (3 miles north-east), Belvedere (3 miles north-east), Northumberland Heath (3 miles east), Lessness Heath (3 miles north-east) and Albany Park (2 miles south). Welling is among the bigger places we cover in Bexley.

Loft storage in Welling
Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route not just the room, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It is a step that matters for any loft in Welling. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room and low eaves that nobody can use.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Welling, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You tell us about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made at our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Questions we are often asked
I live near Welling station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Welling?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Will eaves storage block the ventilation?
Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
What prompts loft storage in Welling
A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it is not. Fitted storage finishes the room.
We are often asked to help with:
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
- Unused space in a dormer
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
For a flat near Welling station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
What to check before you book
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Building Regulations approval for a conversion
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Electrical work in the loft
Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
