How we make loft storage for Bexley

The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Bexley, we will see what fits. Most enquiries start with a converted loft with no fitted furniture and low eaves that nobody can use, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

What goes into your quote

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Loft storage for homes across Bexley

Under the stairs, in the eaves, along a narrow hall or in a bay: homes across Bexley have plenty of spaces that standard furniture cannot use. Eaves cupboards are drawn up for the space you have.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 41% of the housing in Bexley, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 41% of homes in Bexley date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded. About 52% of households in Bexley live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Bexley is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Sidcup: For a family home near Birkbeck Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Waring Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Is bespoke worth it?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

Pricing loft storage in Bexley

What you pay depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about loft storage

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Is the furniture made to order?

Each piece is made at our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
