Maida Vale Loft Storage

In Maida Vale, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. We design your eaves cupboard at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • Boxes piled on loft boards

Why people ask for loft storage in Maida Vale

A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it is not. Fitted storage finishes the room.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A dormer that isn’t being used
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft

If you live in a period home close to St Peter Elgin Avenue, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Loft storage in Maida Vale

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. We design them around what you need to store in Maida Vale. If you are living with standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and no wardrobe that fits under the slope, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace usually has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Maida Vale, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Birch plywood

Knee-wall drawers often carry a real load. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws well. It works well for longer shelves too.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Advice

FAQs: loft storage in Maida Vale

Is parking a problem for fitting in Maida Vale?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Maida Vale?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No. We do not carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much does loft storage cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we will arrange a design visit.

Loft storage for homes in Maida Vale

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Maida Vale, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Maida Vale, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the area around Maida Vale, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If you live in a flat close to Kilburn High Road station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Winfield House, about 1.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
