Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft.
- We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Loft storage for homes in St James's
A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll plan it at the measuring visit in St James's. If you are living with space under the eaves going to waste and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around St James's date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Loft storage for homes in St James's
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St James's were built before 1919 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 934 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of St James's. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. All of London, Westminster included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to St James's fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St James’s Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to London Charing Cross station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Pricing loft storage in St James's
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The width and height of the space
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:
- How you want to use the space
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Examples of the look you are after
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
Your questions about loft storage in St James's
Does a conservation area in or near St James's affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St James's?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Note how narrow the loft stairs are
- Let us know about parking during the design visit
- Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, message us from the contact page and describe it.
