Loft storage for your home in St John's Wood
Loft storage in St John's Wood
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in St John's Wood, we’ll look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are needing storage in a loft office and a new loft conversion that needs storage.
In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around St John's Wood live in purpose-built flats, so eaves cupboards are drawn in sections from the start. Common parts are protected while the pieces come in.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

St John's Wood homes and loft storage
Homes built before 1919 make up about 30% of the housing in the area around St John's Wood, with about 29% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 270 entries within half a mile of the centre of St John's Wood. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in St John's Wood, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
For families living near George Eliot Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to Church of All Souls, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we are often asked
I live in a flat in St John's Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is St John's Wood in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and St John's Wood is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do you do the loft conversion too?
No, the conversion itself is not our work. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Is it time for loft storage?
Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
- Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
- A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
- A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
Winfield House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Can you see real work of theirs?
