About our loft storage in Mortlake

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft. We look at this at the measuring visit in Mortlake. Most enquiries start with seasonal things cluttering the loft room and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Mortlake, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why choose us

Your questions about loft storage in Mortlake

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Mortlake?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Mortlake?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Arranging a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.

Doors and drawer fronts

An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

Do you need loft storage in Mortlake?

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It’s a common need in a loft bedroom.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A dormer that is not being used
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage

Chiswick House, about 1.3 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

Fitted storage in Mortlake

About 58% of the homes in the area around Mortlake went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Mortlake include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Hare and Hounds Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Mortlake is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Mortlake station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Palewell Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
