Loft storage for your home in Old Chiswick
When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
About our loft storage in Old Chiswick
Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Old Chiswick, we’ll see what fits. If your home has needing storage in a loft office and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Old Chiswick were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for loft storage
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
- We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

FAQs: loft storage in Old Chiswick
Can you make loft storage for a home in Old Chiswick?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and Old Chiswick is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Old Chiswick?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?
Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and the pieces are put together in the room.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
What loft storage cannot fix
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
- Building Regulations approval for a conversion
- Structural changes, such as cutting into rafters or joists
Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted storage in Old Chiswick
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Old Chiswick were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Old Chiswick. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Old Chiswick, about 55%, is well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.
If you live in a flat close to Chiswick station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to The William Hogarth Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Near listed buildings like Walpole House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Old Chiswick, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
