Making use of tricky spaces in Lampton

About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Lampton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Lampton, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 31% of homes in the area around Lampton date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use.

For families living near Alexandra Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Inwood Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.1 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Loft storage for homes in Lampton

Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. We look at this during the design visit in Lampton. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are unused space in a dormer and low eaves that nobody can use.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Lampton, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything isn’t right with the storage, get in touch through our contact form and we will talk it through.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A ready-made cupboard pushed into the eaves can block airflow. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. That’s important for the health of the loft. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about loft storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Lampton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Lampton in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, we work across Hounslow, Lampton included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and talk through the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Any work on the structure of the house

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
