Loft storage in Shortlands, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Shortlands, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Loft storage designed for your room

Why bespoke in Shortlands?

If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We’ll give you an honest view at the measuring visit. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What you get with us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

How we make loft storage for Shortlands

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is carried up and fitted in your home in Shortlands. If your home has a loft room that still feels unfinished and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Shortlands, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Shortlands

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around Shortlands, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 7 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Shortlands. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 45% of households in the streets around Shortlands live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bromley Palace, about 0.8 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Near listed buildings like Corner House, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Shortlands, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to St Mark's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Shortlands is about 4 miles east of Orpington, within the London Borough of Bromley. We cover Shortlands as part of our work across Bromley, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Bromley, Shortlands is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 49 places on our list.

Here we cover the BR2, BR1 and BR3 postcode area for loft storage. If your home is on a street like Hayes Lane, Stone Road and Hayes Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. If you are just outside Shortlands, we also cover Eden Park (1 mile south-west), Hayes (2 miles south), Bromley Common (2 miles south-east), West Wickham (2 miles south-west) and Southborough (2 miles east). Other parts of Bromley we cover include Orpington (4 miles east), Beckenham (2 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (5 miles east), Chislehurst (3 miles north-east), Penge (3 miles north-west) and Anerley (3 miles west).

Around Shortlands

FAQs: loft storage in Shortlands

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shortlands?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Shortlands affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do you cover Shortlands?

Yes. We design and make loft storage for homes in Shortlands.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the storage, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will help.

Temperatures in a loft room can swing more than elsewhere. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Doors and drawer fronts

The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Their tops follow the line of the slope.
