TV and media units in Shortlands

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Shortlands, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If you’re living with alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and clutter around the TV, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In an area like Shortlands, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing. The edge can be painted or left as a detail.

Doors and drawer fronts

Cupboard doors keep equipment out of sight and are planned with ventilation where needed.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Shortlands station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Shortlands in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Shortlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Will the cables be hidden?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes

TV and media units in Shortlands: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Shortlands were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Durham Avenue Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Shortlands. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 45% of households in the neighbourhood around Shortlands live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Near listed buildings like Corner House, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Shortlands, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Shortlands station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Church House Gardens? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

How fitting works for TV and media units

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
