TV and media units in Smithfield, City of London

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Smithfield, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room

About our TV and media units in Smithfield

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are leads that show from every angle and space for a soundbar and speakers.

Around Smithfield, most households live in purpose-built flats, so living rooms often double as dining rooms or home offices. TV and media units can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it’s solid or plasterboard.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Living-room carpentry in Smithfield: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Smithfield were built since 2000 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 472 entries within half a mile of the centre of Smithfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Smithfield is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For families living near Charterhouse Square School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Close to Postman's Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Smithfield is about 1 mile south-east of City of London, in the City of London. We design and make TV and media units for homes in Smithfield and the rest of the City of London, as part of our work in every London borough. We list Smithfield among 8 places we cover in the City of London.

We work across the EC1V, EC1P and EC1R postcode area. We cover homes on streets such as Oat Lane, Shoe Lane and Long Lane, along with the roads around them, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. Smithfield is near the A1 and A4; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. We also cover Farringdon (1 mile north), Blackfriars (1 mile south), Holborn (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile south-west) and Clerkenwell (1 mile north).

Local landmarks in Smithfield

Around Smithfield, we cover homes near St Alban's Church of England Primary School, London Nautical School and Barts Health Archives and the streets around them. Also close by are Oriole pub (less than half a mile south-west) and St Mary-at-Hill (1 mile south-east). There is a railway station in Smithfield itself: Farringdon station. A little further out are Montfichet's Tower (close by, under half a mile south) and Gabriel's Wharf (0.8 miles south). For a walk, there’s Ludgate Hill.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Smithfield?

Yes, we work across the City of London, Smithfield included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

I live near Farringdon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of the City of London and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it is useful to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Is it time for TV and media units?

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go

If your home is one of the older houses near St Bartholomew-the-Less, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

How to choose a carpenter in London

What we don’t do

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
