  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. It’s useful to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

About our loft storage in Wandsworth

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. For a home in Wandsworth, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and a loft room with too many jobs.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Wandsworth, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

How we price loft storage

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How big the furniture is

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, message us from the contact page.

How fitting works for loft storage

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Getting a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Electrical work in the loft
  • Approval for structural changes
  • Altering the structure of the loft

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Eaves doors and drawers

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly its fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Their tops follow the line of the slope.

Making use of tricky spaces in Wandsworth

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wandsworth were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Wandsworth, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Anne (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Church Row (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 24% of households in the area around Wandsworth live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

For a family home near St Anne's CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Living in a block of flats near Wandsworth Town station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to King George's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

FAQs: loft storage in Wandsworth

Does a conservation area in or near Wandsworth affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Wandsworth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one can’t. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
