Loft storage for homes in Southfields

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Southfields were built before 1919 (about 57%) and since 2000 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Southfields, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Southfields, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your children go to Floreat Wandsworth Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St John the Divine, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Loft storage in Southfields: what you get

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Southfields. If your home has no wardrobe that fits under the slope and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Southfields built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Pricing loft storage in Southfields

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

What prompts loft storage in Southfields

Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. Standard furniture rarely suits the new room. Fitted storage finishes the room.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

The wider area includes historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Common questions about loft storage

My home in Southfields is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Southfields?

Yes, Southfields is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How is loft storage priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
