FAQs: window seats in Coulsdon
Is Coulsdon in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Coulsdon is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do you cover homes near Coulsdon South station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How is a window seat priced?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Window seats in Coulsdon
Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that aren’t quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. If your home has unused space below a sash window and no space for toys and games, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
An interwar house usually has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Coulsdon, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Why us?

Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
What window seats cannot fix
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Painting the walls of the bay
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
Boards, parts and finishes

- Radiator grilles
- Hand-painted finish
- Lift-up lids or drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Let us know about the radiator before we visit
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
- Choose a colour that suits the room
Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You’ll know it all works as it should.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. It will look better for longer with a little care.
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

How to get a quote
