Loft storage designed for your room

Loft storage for homes in Coulsdon

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We’ll talk through the options in Coulsdon. If you’re living with a converted loft with no fitted furniture and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Coulsdon, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and eaves cupboards are made to suit it.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Why bespoke in Coulsdon?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes often do not fit up narrow loft stairs. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the loft.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, cut to the angle of the slope. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Questions from Coulsdon

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Coulsdon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is Coulsdon in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. Coulsdon is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What loft storage cannot fix

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Adding or replacing insulation
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
