When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

About our TV and media units in Abbey Wood

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Abbey Wood, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. Typical reasons to get in touch are a TV that looks out of place in the room and games, controllers and remotes everywhere; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Abbey Wood date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in low- and high-rise blocks as well as houses. Post-war walls tend to be truer than older ones, but ceilings and floors still get measured, as nothing is assumed. Cable routes, ventilation for set-top boxes and the position of sockets all go into the design, and any new wiring is a job for your electrician.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about TV and media units in Abbey Wood

Is parking a problem for fitting in Abbey Wood?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Abbey Wood?

Yes, Abbey Wood is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Greenwich and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Will the cables be hidden?

That is the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Abbey Wood

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an awkward wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Clutter around the TV

Danson House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have simple halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured during the design visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. Every width is made for the room.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Living-room carpentry in Abbey Wood: local notes

In the streets around Abbey Wood, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Abbey Wood include Church of St Nicholas (plumstead) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Plume of Feathers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 45% of households in the neighbourhood around Abbey Wood live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and TV and media units are made to those widths.

If you live in a period home close to Saint Michael and All Angels, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Close to Abbey Wood Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
