Need built-in bookshelves in Abbey Wood?

Abbey Wood homes and built-in bookshelves

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Abbey Wood went up before 1919, and about 35% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Abbey Wood, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Nicholas (plumstead) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Plume of Feathers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Abbey Wood is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to Saint Michael and All Angels, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. The wider area includes historic houses like Danson House, about 2.1 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Abbey Wood is within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, about 1 mile west of Plumstead. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Abbey Wood included. Our work takes in places right across Greenwich, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

We cover every part of SE2, SE18 and DA16. Streets in the area include Bevan Road, Mcleod Road and Manton Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for built-in bookshelves. Abbey Wood is near the A206, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Close by, we also work in West Heath (1 mile south-east), Lessness Heath (2 miles east), Belvedere (2 miles east), Welling (2 miles south) and Crook Log (2 miles south). Across the rest of Greenwich, our area takes in Greenwich (5 miles west), Eltham (4 miles south-west), Woolwich (2 miles west), Westcombe Park (4 miles west), Well Hall (3 miles south-west) and Maze Hill (5 miles west).

Built-in bookshelves in Abbey Wood: what you get

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Greenwich and the rest of London. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelving behind a desk for books and files and bare walls that could hold shelving.

Post-war blocks of flats often have concrete floors, ceilings and some concrete walls, and drilling into them takes the right tools and fixings. Because many homes around Abbey Wood were built in the post-war years, the walls are checked during the design visit before the design of built-in bookshelves is settled. Where a wall is a lightweight partition, heavy pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back for stability.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Abbey Wood station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is Abbey Wood in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Greenwich, Abbey Wood included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that normally goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

How do I get a quote?

Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes shelving look part of the room.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Where other trades come in

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each. Let us know about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the measuring visit.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Abbey Wood

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

If your children go to Alexander McLeod Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
