Abbey Wood Fitted Wardrobes

We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Abbey Wood, designed around the room you have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

About our fitted wardrobes in Abbey Wood

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

Many homes around Abbey Wood date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. Ceiling heights are often lower than in older homes, and the proportions of fitted wardrobes follow the room. In a block of flats, each piece is made in sections that fit the stairs or lift.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Abbey Wood

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Abbey Wood?

Yes, we work across Greenwich, Abbey Wood included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Abbey Wood?

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

For families living near Alexander McLeod Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Fitted bedroom furniture in Abbey Wood

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Abbey Wood went up before 1919, and about 35% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Abbey Wood, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Nicholas (plumstead) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Plume of Feathers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That normally means a van in Abbey Wood needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

For an older house near Saint Michael and All Angels, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses like Danson House, about 2.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Abbey Wood is about 1 mile west of Plumstead, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Abbey Wood and the rest of Greenwich. Abbey Wood is one of the places in Greenwich where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 18 places on our list.

Every address in SE2, SE18 and DA16 is covered for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets.
