Bespoke kitchens in Abbey Wood: what you get

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are more storage in a small kitchen and a kitchen finished in your colours.

In homes from the 1950s and 1960s, the boiler is often in the kitchen. Around Abbey Wood, many homes come from the post-war decades, so the design often has to work around one. Any cabinet around a boiler keeps the clearances its maker asks for, with any boiler work left to an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber
  • Wiring for appliances and lights

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Islands where space allows
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Kitchens in Abbey Wood homes

In the neighbourhood around Abbey Wood, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Abbey Wood, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Nicholas (plumstead) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Plume of Feathers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Greenwich included. Vans bringing furniture to Abbey Wood fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

For families living near Alexander McLeod Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. If your home is one of the older houses near Saint Michael and All Angels, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Living in a block of flats near Abbey Wood station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Abbey Wood station?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Abbey Wood?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

Why bespoke in Abbey Wood?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, finished to suit the room. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, while fitted furniture arrives in sections made to fit the route. The sections are joined once inside.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Why choose us

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

Once the kitchen is fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.

Measure the route into the kitchen not just the room. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.
