Why bespoke in Barkingside?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What you get with us

TV and media units in Barkingside

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. People usually come to us about bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and clutter around the TV; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Barkingside, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Barkingside

Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

Valentines Mansion, about 1.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What to check before you book

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Seven Kings station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Barkingside?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Barkingside is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

How do I get a quote?

Just message us from the contact page. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit.

Can you plan for a future TV?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. It is useful to know the size you’re thinking of so the space and cable routes suit it.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned. It keeps the unit tidy.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

How fitting works for TV and media units

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
