About our TV and media units in Goodmayes

We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Redbridge and the rest of London. People usually come to us about a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and a big screen that dominates the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Goodmayes, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives smooth, even surfaces for painting with crisp edges.

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood helps.

Living-room carpentry in Goodmayes: local notes

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Goodmayes went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 35% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Goodmayes include Church of All Saints (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Redbridge has its own. Where a street in Goodmayes is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For families living near Goodmayes Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

How fitting works for TV and media units

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Let us know about access early
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Don’t let clutter build up against the unit’s vents when you add equipment.

The problems TV and media units solve

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room

If you live in a flat close to Goodmayes station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Your questions about TV and media units in Goodmayes

Is parking a problem for fitting in Goodmayes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Goodmayes?

Yes, Goodmayes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can you plan for a future TV?

If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. Tell us the size you have in mind so the space and cable routes suit it.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
