TV and media units in Barnet: how it works

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall. That job is for your electrician. It’s best done before we fit so the sockets land in the right place. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are leads that show from every angle and a screen at the wrong height.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Quotes in Barnet

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Why work with us

  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

Starting with a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

TV and media units across Barnet: local notes

Most people in Barnet who ask about TV and media units want somewhere for books, the TV and the things that pile up. TV and media units can do all three in one design, made in our workshop and fitted on the days set out in your quote.

In Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Barnet (about 34%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both. Of the 41 places we have local pages for in Barnet, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Homes across Barnet range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Finchley: For a family home near Manorside Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Near listed buildings like The Manor House, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Finchley, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Let us know about access early
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

Common questions about TV and media units

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It’s made at our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
