TV and media units designed for your room
Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

About our TV and media units in Whetstone
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and a big screen that dominates the wall.
In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Whetstone, so that layout is worth knowing well. TV and media units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Do you need TV and media units in Whetstone?
The most common reason is a mess of wires. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
If you live in a flat close to Oakleigh Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
How we price TV and media units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Getting in touch
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Whetstone
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Whetstone?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do you cover homes near Oakleigh Park station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
How do I get started?
Just send us a few details through our contact form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Once it is in, don’t block the gaps.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
