Why people ask for TV and media units in Brockley
Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and that is where a bespoke unit helps.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Choosing a carpenter
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
TV and media units in Brockley: what you get
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If you’re living with boxes with no ventilation and speakers muffled behind doors, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Brockley, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Brockley
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brockley?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Brockley affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.
How do I get a quote?
It is easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What affects the cost of TV and media units
Several things affect the price:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
What to send when you get in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

TV and media units in Brockley: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Brockley were built before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Brockley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Around Brockley, about 57% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Hilda, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Blythe Hill Fields? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.
Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Each one needs space around it.
