Brockley Fitted Home Offices

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Brockley, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • No proper place to work from home

Fitted home offices in Brockley

How we make fitted home offices for Brockley

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Brockley or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with wires with no tidy route and shelves that sag under books and files, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Brockley, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. An alcove is often just wide enough for a desk, with shelves above, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Check whether you will need new sockets
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Brockley?

Yes. Brockley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lewisham and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Brockley?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we have allowed for them.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

Often, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we will measure and tell you what fits.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

Often, yes. We plan the office so there’s still space for guests, or with doors that close over the desk. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

What affects the price in Brockley

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking near your home
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Brockley homes and fitted home offices

About 57% of the homes in the streets around Brockley went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Brockley, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Brockley, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Hilda, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Beecroft Garden Primary, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

Brockley is about 1 mile north of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Whether your home in Brockley is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Brockley among 22 places we cover in Lewisham.

Design visits and fitting in SE4, SE23 and SE6 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street such as Ivy Road, Nash Road and Lindal Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted home offices. Close by, we also work in Crofton Park (1 mile south-east), Honor Oak (1 mile west), Ladywell (1 mile east), Forest Hill (1 mile south-west) and Nunhead (1 mile north-west). Across the rest of Lewisham, our area takes in Deptford (2 miles north), Surrey Canal (2 miles north), Sydenham (2 miles south-west), Bell Green (2 miles south), Lee (2 miles east) and Blackheath (2 miles north-east).

Our area takes in the homes around Blythe Hill Tavern and Prendergast Ladywell School and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Brockley itself: Crofton Park station. Nearby you’ll also find Lewisham Shopping Centre (1.2 miles north-east) and Horniman Museum and Gardens (1.4 miles south-west). Not far away are One Tree Hill.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. It keeps the work surface clear.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A room with two jobs to do
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • An tricky space with no furniture that fits
  • Shelves that sag under books and files

Living in a block of flats near Crofton Park station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
