Living-room carpentry in Blackheath: local notes
In the streets around Blackheath, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 36%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 112 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Blackheath. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 42% of homes in the neighbourhood around Blackheath were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.
For a flat near Blackheath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Manor House Gardens, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Near listed buildings like Numbers 1 to 14 (consecutive) the Paragon, less than half a mile east of the centre of Blackheath, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

How we make TV and media units for Blackheath
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If your home has a big screen that dominates the wall and a cabinet that traps heat, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Many homes around Blackheath date from those decades, so TV and media units are often planned to give the room a focal point. Low cupboards with shelves over them can sit beside or below the window.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Blackheath?
Yes, we work across Lewisham, Blackheath included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Blackheath?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will the cables be hidden?
We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
How do I get started?
Just fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
When you need someone else
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
- Configuring the TV and sound system
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
- We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not overload sockets.

How we price TV and media units
The price for your room depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Before the design visit
When you contact us, these help most:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
