TV and media units in Crofton Park: what you get

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and speakers muffled behind doors.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Crofton Park built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we don’t do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Configuring the TV and sound system

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Living-room carpentry in Crofton Park: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the streets around Crofton Park, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Crofton Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Brockley Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Crofton Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Hilda, under half a mile west of the centre of Crofton Park, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live near Blythe Hill Fields, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Crofton Park is about 1 mile north of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. We cover Crofton Park as part of our work across Lewisham. We list Crofton Park among 22 places we cover in Lewisham.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Common questions about TV and media units

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My house in Crofton Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind so the unit suits your next set. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Do you work in Crofton Park?

Yes. Crofton Park is part of the area we cover. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
