TV and media units in Forest Hill, Lewisham

In Forest Hill, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Cables trailing across the wall

Some equipment needs line of sight for its remote, so those spaces may be open rather than behind a door.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits shelves for heavy speakers and amplifiers.

How we make TV and media units for Forest Hill

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Forest Hill, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. People usually come to us about clutter around the TV and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Forest Hill, a large share of homes are that age. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Forest Hill

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • A screen at the wrong height

For an older house near Honor Oak Christian Fellowship Centre, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Common questions about TV and media units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Forest Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Forest Hill?

Yes, we work across Lewisham, Forest Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Tell us the size you might move to during the design visit.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Living-room carpentry in Forest Hill: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Forest Hill were built before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Forest Hill, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Forest Hill, about 57%, is well above the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If you live near Peckham Rye, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a family home near Fairlawn Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.
