TV and Media Units in Hammersmith

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Hammersmith, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Clutter around the TV
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • A screen at the wrong height

TV and media units for homes in Hammersmith

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That is work for your electrician. It’s best done before we fit so the sockets land in the right place. If your home has boxes and consoles on the floor and wasted space around the screen, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Hammersmith, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Doors and drawer fronts

Some equipment needs line of sight for its remote, so those spaces may be open rather than behind a door.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Hammersmith is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Hammersmith?

The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Once it’s in, don’t block the gaps.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Hammersmith homes and TV and media units

About 68% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hammersmith went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Hammersmith is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in Hammersmith will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

For an older house near Church of the Holy Innocents, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live near Brook Green, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a flat near Kensington Olympia station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

When you need someone else

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
