TV and media units in Hurlingham

TV and media units for homes in Hurlingham

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. If you are planning a TV unit in Hurlingham, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about standard units leaving gaps and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.

With a large share of homes around Hurlingham built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

Advice

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Your questions about TV and media units in Hurlingham

My home in Hurlingham is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Imperial Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. We give each box its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

A bespoke unit is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Living-room storage in Hurlingham

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hurlingham were built before 1919 (about 55%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Hurlingham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the neighbourhood around Hurlingham, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Near listed buildings like Hurlingham House, under half a mile south of the centre of Hurlingham, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Parsons Green (park), TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For an older house near St Dionis, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
