TV and Media Units in Chinbrook

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Chinbrook, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Nowhere good for speakers

TV and media units in Chinbrook: what you get

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a TV that looks out of place in the room and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Chinbrook, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can leave room for a larger screen if you expect to upgrade. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Looking after your furniture

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Let us know about access early

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Chinbrook in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Chinbrook is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Grove Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it’s in, do not block the gaps.

Built-in living-room furniture in Chinbrook

In the area around Chinbrook, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Chinbrook, Historic England’s list includes Baring Hall Hotel and associated stable block (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west, and The Grange Eltham College Junior School (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 7% of homes around Chinbrook were built before 1919, well below the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So the walls behind TV and media units here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 1.3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Grove Park station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Chinbrook Meadows, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
