Window seats in Chinbrook, Lewisham

Planning window seats for a home in Chinbrook? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You will know it all works as it should.

Use a step rather than standing on the seat. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. A little care keeps it looking good.

Window seats for homes in Chinbrook

Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It is a job that suits bespoke work, in Chinbrook or anywhere else. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and a recess under the window doing nothing.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Chinbrook, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

FAQs: window seats in Chinbrook

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Grove Park station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Chinbrook?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Pull-out drawers

A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Around a radiator, the drawers are placed to leave room for the heat. We agree the layout at the measuring visit.
