Your questions about TV and media units in East Barnet
Do you cover homes near Oakleigh Park station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Barnet?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. We give each box its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall during the design visit.
How we make TV and media units for East Barnet
We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Barnet and the rest of London. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about clutter around the TV and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around East Barnet, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Before and after fitting day
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Let us know about access early
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.
What TV and media units cannot fix
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Ventilated cabinets
- Spray-painted finish
- Cable routes
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around East Barnet went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Barnet. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in East Barnet. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary the Virgin, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Oakleigh Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What prompts TV and media units in East Barnet
Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. A unit around it puts it in proportion.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
- A screen at the wrong height
- Boxes with no ventilation
- A TV stand that does not fit the wall
If your children go to Church Hill School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
