Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

How we make loft storage for East Barnet

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route as well as the room, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in East Barnet. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxes and suitcases with no home and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe.

Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around East Barnet is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design and finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Making use of tricky spaces in East Barnet

In the neighbourhood around East Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and before 1919 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Barnet include Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Water Tower at Church Farm School (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 46% of households in the neighbourhood around East Barnet, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Living in a block of flats near Oakleigh Park station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Church Hill School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary the Virgin, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Your questions about loft storage in East Barnet

I live near Oakleigh Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is East Barnet in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, we work across Barnet, East Barnet included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there’s height, with shelves where it’s low. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
