What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

TV and media units in Highgate

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. If you’re living with leads that show from every angle and set-top boxes stacked on a stand, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Highgate date from then. Full-height TV and media units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Highgate in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Highgate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Haringey and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Highgate?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it is in, do not block the gaps.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

TV and media units for homes in Highgate

In the streets around Highgate, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 269 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Highgate. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. More than a third of the homes in the area around Highgate (about 48%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers, with cable routes and ventilation planned in.

If you live in a period home close to Highgate United Reformed Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Whittington Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a flat close to Upper Holloway station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Highgate is in the London Borough of Haringey, about 4 miles north-east of Tottenham. We design and make TV and media units for homes in Highgate and the rest of Haringey, as part of our work in every London borough. Across Haringey, we cover Highgate, along with the rest of the borough.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and top. It is what gives the unit its built-in look.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.

Practical tips

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps everything neat.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
