Questions from Cranbrook
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cranbrook?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Cranbrook?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Cranbrook is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
TV and media units in Cranbrook
Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. People normally come to us about a cabinet that traps heat and a tangle of wires behind the TV; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Around Cranbrook, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges and corners well and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables typically still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What happens on fitting day
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
TV and media units for homes in Cranbrook
In the neighbourhood around Cranbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cranbrook include Valentines Mansion (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north, and Chapel (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 21% of households in the area around Cranbrook live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
For a family home near The Ursuline Academy Ilford, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Clement's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What prompts TV and media units in Cranbrook
Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. A unit around it puts it in proportion.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- Nowhere good for speakers
- A cabinet that traps heat
For a flat near Ilford station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Configuring the TV and sound system
