Fitted Wardrobes in Goodmayes

In Goodmayes, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

How we make fitted wardrobes for Goodmayes

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and storage boxes stacked under the bed.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Goodmayes is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Bedroom storage in Goodmayes

About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Goodmayes went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 35% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Goodmayes include Church of All Saints (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 36% of homes in the area around Goodmayes date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

For families living near Goodmayes Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For a flat near Goodmayes station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat, even across a wide section.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Is bespoke worth it?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Goodmayes station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Goodmayes?

Yes, Goodmayes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
