TV and media units in Hanger Hill: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hanger Hill were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Hanger Hill, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Ealing are set locally. Depending on your street in Hanger Hill, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

For an older house near Church of the Ascension, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near Holy Family Catholic Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Hanger Hill is about 1 mile south-west of Ealing, part of the London Borough of Ealing. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hanger Hill is part of that. We cover places right across Ealing, large and small.

How we make TV and media units for Hanger Hill

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a cabinet that traps heat and a big screen that dominates the wall.

With a large share of homes around Hanger Hill built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Arranging a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Your questions about TV and media units in Hanger Hill

My home in Hanger Hill is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is Hanger Hill in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Hanger Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Do you need TV and media units in Hanger Hill?

Most people come to us because of the cables. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers, and no stand ever quite hides them. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

Living in a block of flats near Acton Main Line station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
