How fitting works for window seats
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you contact us with some details about the window, including any radiator under it.
- We visit to measure the window and go through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Window seats in Hanger Hill
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there’s a cushion on top. At the design visit in Hanger Hill, we will help you choose. People usually come to us about no comfortable place to sit in the light and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Hanger Hill date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.
We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Hanger Hill homes and window seats
Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Hanger Hill, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Hanger Hill, Historic England’s list includes West Acton Underground Station (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Park Royal London Regional Transport Station (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 49% of homes in the area around Hanger Hill were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age, and they’re natural places for a window seat, with a grille where there’s a radiator below.
If you live in a flat close to Acton Main Line station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Ealing Common, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Hanger Hill is about 1 mile south-west of Ealing, in the London Borough of Ealing. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hanger Hill is part of that. We cover places right across Ealing, large and small.
Every home in W3, W5 and NW10 is covered for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Close by, we also work in Park Royal (1 mile north-east), West Twyford (1 mile north), Acton (1 mile south-east), South Acton (1 mile south) and Acton Green (2 miles south-east). Other parts of Ealing we cover include Southall (4 miles west), Greenford (3 miles north-west), Northolt (4 miles north-west), Bedford Park (2 miles south-east), Northfields (2 miles south-west) and South Ealing (2 miles south-west).

Flats, conversions and lettings
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Think about what you’ll store under the seat
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is typically all it needs. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.
Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
What prompts window seats in Hanger Hill
After a room has been redecorated, a window seat can finish it off. Mention any decorating plans at the design visit so the timing works. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.
Window seats can help with:
- A child’s room that needs storage and seating
- A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
- Needing more storage in the room
- Wanting a quiet place to read
For a family home near Holy Family Catholic Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Questions we’re often asked
I live near Acton Main Line station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hanger Hill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Which materials go into your window seats?
The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can a window seat go over the radiator?
Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat isn’t trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, and its edge can be left visible or painted.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before the seat comes to you. The colour is agreed with you.
