How it is made
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.
Birch plywood
Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat.
Built-in bookshelves in Hanger Hill
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. For a home in Hanger Hill, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are shelves that sag under books and empty alcoves that could hold books.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Hanger Hill built before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it, particularly behind loaded shelves.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Hanger Hill
Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A room lined with books
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Space for art books and records
- Books piled on the floor
If you live in a period home close to Church of the Ascension, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Why bespoke in Hanger Hill?
Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
- A quote in writing follows.
- Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Living-room carpentry in Hanger Hill: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hanger Hill, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hanger Hill. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 29% of households in the streets around Hanger Hill, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Ealing Common? Tips worth knowing
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Keep heavy things on low shelves and use a step rather than the shelves to reach up.
Questions from Hanger Hill
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hanger Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Hanger Hill?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Hanger Hill?
It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
What are your built-in bookshelves made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. The materials are named in your written quote.
