Wall beds for homes in Hillingdon

In the neighbourhood around Hillingdon, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hillingdon. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Hillingdon, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live near Norman Leddy Memorial Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

How we make wall beds for Hillingdon

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall works hard. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a real mattress for visitors and a spare room that’s rarely slept in.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Hillingdon, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Why people ask for wall beds in Hillingdon

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in

Ickenham Hall, about 1.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

What to check before you book

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

Questions from Hillingdon

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Drayton station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hillingdon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How are wall beds priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

What it’s made from

Bed mechanism housing

The housing has to be strong and square, so it’s built from sturdy board. It’s fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek front, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Making good the walls after other work

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
