How we make TV and media units for Kevington
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. People usually come to us about bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and boxes with no ventilation, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Many homes around Kevington date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in low- and high-rise blocks as well as houses. Post-war walls tend to be truer than older ones, but ceilings and floors still get measured, as nothing is assumed. For TV and media walls, cable routes are planned before the walls are drilled.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, while fitted furniture fills the space. Every width is made for the room.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What happens on fitting day
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Your questions about TV and media units in Kevington
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Kevington?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Kevington included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kevington?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

Living-room carpentry in Kevington: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Kevington were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 43%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Kevington include Kevington Hall (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and Blueberry Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Kevington, based on Census 2021. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and TV and media units are made to those widths.
For a flat near St Mary Cray station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near Unity Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

- Will the quote be in writing?
