TV and media units in Poverest: what you get
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. If you are living with a screen at the wrong height and wasted space around the screen, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Poverest, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Living-room carpentry in Poverest: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Poverest, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Poverest, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your road in Poverest falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Near listed buildings like Spring Hall, about 0.6 miles east of the centre of Poverest, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near St Mary Cray station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Andrew's, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Poverest is in the London Borough of Bromley, about 1 mile south of Orpington. Whether your home in Poverest is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Bromley coverage includes Poverest, along with the rest of the borough.
We cover every part of BR5, BR6 and BR7. You’ll find streets here such as Kent Road, Ascot Road and Sheen Road, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Poverest sits close to the A224, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Neighbouring places we cover for TV and media units include St Mary Cray (1 mile north-east), Orpington (1 mile south), St Paul's Cray (1 mile north), Derry Downs (1 mile south-east) and Kevington (2 miles east). Elsewhere in Bromley, we also cover Bromley (4 miles west), Beckenham (6 miles west), Chislehurst (2 miles north-west), Penge (7 miles west), Anerley (7 miles west) and Crystal Palace (8 miles west).
Around Poverest
Our area takes in the homes around Walsingham School, Harris Academy Orpington and The Royal Albert pub. There is a railway station in Poverest itself: St Mary Cray station. Nearby you’ll also find London Borough of Bromley Museum (0.8 miles south) and Orpington Hospital (1.9 miles south). For a walk, there is The Warren.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
Honest limits
Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Configuring the TV and sound system
- Structural changes to the wall
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it is made from
- Ventilated cabinets
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Cable routes
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Check where the seating will go
- Let us know about access early
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
Once your equipment is in, check that it is not running hot. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.
Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Give each its own space.
How fitting works for TV and media units
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Common questions about TV and media units
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Poverest?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Mary Cray station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How much will my TV unit cost?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
