About our TV and media units in Derry Downs
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. If you are planning a TV unit in Derry Downs, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cables trailing across the wall and nowhere good for speakers.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Derry Downs, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Derry Downs homes and TV and media units
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Derry Downs, with about 30% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Derry Downs. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 39% of homes in the neighbourhood around Derry Downs were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so TV and media units often run along a full wall, with fixings chosen for the wall.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew's, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near St Mary Cray station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Is it time for TV and media units?
Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.
TV and media units can help with:
- A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
If your children go to St Philomena's Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
What to check before you book
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- A written quote that sets out the job
Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

FAQs: TV and media units in Derry Downs
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Derry Downs?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Derry Downs affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.
How do I get started?
Just use our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What affects the price in Derry Downs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The width and height of the space
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- How you want to use the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
